Community Notification: Increased Flaring Activity

LNG Canada selected the most energy-efficient natural gas turbine engines to drive the compressors in the liquefaction process. As part of the commissioning activities, one gas turbine engine within LNG Train 1 will start-up using fuel gas to drive a compressor for a mechanical test run using nitrogen. The gas turbine will operate at approximately 15 percent capacity. During this commissioning activity, various elements in the system are tested, including operating parameters (e.g., pressures, temperatures, flow rates) and safety systems (e.g., emergency shut down procedures).

The flare system will be used to support this commissioning activity, which is forecast to start September 20, 2024 and occur intermittently over a 10-day period.

When the testing is occurring, the flaring volume is anticipated to be approximately 150,000 cubic metres per hour, with a rate of up to approximately 100 tons/day. The anticipated height of the flame during this intermittent period is up to 25 metres.

While elevated noise levels are expected in the vicinity of these systems; no noticeable increase in noise is anticipated in the local community.

These flaring operations are in accordance with the Liquefied Natural Gas Facility Regulation under the Energy Resource Activities Act. All safety plans and approvals are in place.

This commissioning activity will also be performed on the remaining three natural gas turbines and compressors in the future.
